Diploma in Pharmacy

Duration of course : 2 years

  The requirement for admission is a B. Pharmacy degree from any recognized university of India with a minimum of 55% marks (aggregate of 4 years). For SC / ST / Category-I candidates, the prescribed percentage of marks will be 50% of the maximum marks in the qualifying examinations.

  Eligibility criteria: In order to be admitted to this course you should have passed your plus 2 level in the Science stream. The degree obtained should be from a recognized board with a minimum pass marks attained individually in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics respectively. Minimum aggregate marks received by the students should be 45%.

  10+2 passed with Science stream subjects (PCB or M) from a recognized board is the minimum educational qualification required (in some institutes, PCB subjects are mandatory). Minimum aggregate marks required may vary from one institute to another. It could be anywhere between 45-60% marks (in main science subjects).

Scope:   Many students would like to know that what kind of a scope does Diploma in Pharmacy offer? For your information, please note that a student attaining such kind of course is eligible to start practicing immediately after he/ she passes out. There are various options where the students can apply after passing out the course. These include Government hospitals, private hospitals, clinics, community health centres or private drug stores. The job description remains to be as follows:

  • check prescriptions (made by the Doctor),
  • dispense drugs to patients,
  • give them advice & directions,
  • keep stock of drugs in storage,
  • keep accounts and maintain the inventory

One of the added advantage of the course is that, the students can also pursue their independent business through opening a private drug store.

  Diploma in Pharmacy certificate holders may start practicing as pharmacists in India. They may work at drug stores in Government hospitals, private hospitals, clinics, community health centres or private drug stores. In such a work setup, they usually check prescriptions (made by the Doctor), dispense drugs to patients, give them advice & directions, keep stock of drugs in storage, keep accounts and maintain the inventory.

  Other than working for hospitals or private drug stores, D Pharm certificate holders may even start their own private drug store! To thrive in such a venture, one must have access to decent financial resources and entrepreneurship skills.

  Which companies hire pharmacists? 
Once you decide to enroll for the course it is important to know that, which companies actually hire the students passing out the D Pharm course? For your information, please note that, the following companies would like to hire pharmacists:

  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • Healthcare organizations / Hospitals

  Pharmaceutical companies are also known to hire D Pharm folks. In this sector, they may work at divisions/sections like- manufacturing, process control, quality control and marketing. Talking about marketing sector, one may work for firms involved in pharmaceutical products marketing. One may also work as a medical representative.

  Other than working right after completing D Pharm course, one may also go for further studies (B Pharm, Pharm D, M.Pharm. etc). After completing Master’s level course, one may take up the job of a lecturer/tutor/instructor at relevant pharmacy schools or institutes.
